There is a nip in the air, December is here and my mind goes to one of my favorite tales [...]

There is a nip in the air, December is here and my mind goes to one of my favorite tales of the holiday season told by O Henry, the story of Della and Jim Young the main characters in the “Gift of the Magi”- a young married couple with very little money. Jim has suffered a thirty-percent pay cut, and the two must scrimp for everything. On the day before Christmas, Della counts the money she has painstakingly saved for months. She hardly has enough to buy anything at all. She must find a way to buy Jim the present he deserves. As she looks in the mirror, an idea comes to her. Jim and Della have two possessions of which they are both proud. One is Jim’s gold watch, which had been handed down from his grandfather. The other is Della’s hair, lustrous, shining, and falling past…

If you know O Henry and the story you know that Della cuts her beautiful long hair off to sell it for $20 to buy Jim a gold fob for his gold watch. Jim sold his watch to purchase tortoise-shell combs for her hair. These two called “foolish” children by O Henry sacrificed for each other their greatest treasures. It was said that “of all those who give gifts these two were the wisest”.

If you remember the unselfishness of Della and Jim Young and how much their story has moved you today or in past holiday seasons- Make a donation today.

Give unselfishly to support a child’s future!

Don’t let this season of joy and giving pass without remembering the young men and women here at the Yerwood Center. Your gift will change lives!
Happy Holidays from myself and the Yerwood Center staff and children.

Sincerely yours,
Eugene Campbell, President & CEO

Bridgeport Area Youth Ministry (BAYM) is offering a series of Computer GenesisTM introductory classes to teens at the Yerwood Center, starting on October 3, 2011. These classes teach young people to use and troubleshoot computers. Participants acquire basic computer literacy, technical skills and job readiness competencies, and are introduced to the world of business. Students work as a team rebuilding PCs and preparing them for reuse.

Upon completion of the 9-week technology class, each student is awarded their own computer. Over 2,600 young people have received PCs through this program. BAYM’s Computer GenesisTM program has been featured on Connecticut television and radio shows, and in Fairfield County Magazine and newspaper articles.

BAYM is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Bridgeport. BAYM’s mission is to enable inner-city youth to discover their talents and to exercise them in a real world business environment through technology, trade training and career development.

In 2012, BAYM will open a new Technology Center in Stamford with programs and employment opportunities for local youth, and will continue its collaboration with the Yerwood Center.

For the tenth consecutive year, The Volunteer Center of Southwestern Fairfield County’s Workplace Volunteer Council companies engaged in a summer reading program with the Yerwood Center. Students entering grades K-8 were paired with Pricewaterhouse Coopers corporate employees in one-on-one reading sessions for an hour a week for four weeks during the summer. The goal of the Summer Reading Partners program is to maintain student reading levels during the summer when students often show a decline in academic performance. The program uses books on the Stamford Public Schools’ summer reading list.

The Volunteer Center’s mission is to bring together people, organizations and resources to promote volunteerism and make a meaningful difference in our world. The Volunteer Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located in Stamford and serving Lower Fairfield County.
